OBITUARY: INSANE MAN KILLS SELF.
Riggle’s Mind Deranged by Wounds Received While Fighting for Country
Robert W. B. Riggle, insane as a result of shell wounds and gas received as a soldier at Chateau Thierry and in the Argonne forest, committed suicide at the state hospital for the insane yesterday by shooting himself in the forehead with a .22 caliber rifle. His home was at Sutherlin, Douglas county.
Riggle, who had been despondent since his arrival at the hospital, but was more depressed than usual on Friday because another patient had complained at his snoring in his sleep. He was 33 years old, and because he was regarded as a reliable patient, was allowed the freedom of the grounds. The suicide was committed in a barn loft at the hospital. Riggle’s father, W.B. Riggle, lives at The Dalles, and a sister lives at Sutherlin. The young man was born in Kansas. He was committed to the hospital from Douglas county March 6 last. Oregon Statesman 5 June 1920 1:2
