OBITUARY: DEATH'S MESSENGER TAKES A PIONEER
Nathan Robinson is dead. A pioneer here has taken his final leave, and crossed the river that flows 'twixt time and eternity. We stand on the shore and vainly attempt to pierce with mortal eye mist that hides the road taken by our friend. From this last farewell we turn for consolation to the study of the life of an upright man. Nathan Robinson was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, in the year 1810, and died at his family residence, one mile south of Gervais in Marion county, in this state, Nov. 4, 1881, after a short though painful illness, having thus completed his seventy-first year. In 1834, in Crawford county, Ohio, he was joined in wedlock to Mary Dorland, who stays behind to walk in the path of life alone. In 1846 he with his young family immigrated to the Willamette valley, then best known as --"the continuous woods Where rolls the Oregon, and bears no sound save its own dashings", and settled the Robinson donation claim, now known as the Reedville farm, in Washington county. There he resided for fourteen years. Disposing of that property, he fixed his residence in Portland for a time, being by occupation a farmer, he longed for the freedom and room of the country. To gratify his tastes, he purchased a landed estate near Gervais, in Marion county, where he spent his last days in congenial employments. In matters of farming his judgment was unerring. About his premises there was always an air of tidiness and thrift. In the early pioneer days of Oregon he had much to do in calling the attention of the Atlantic and Mississippi valley states to the capabilities of this country as a fruit-growing section. In the fifties, apples taken from his orchard, on what is now known as the Reedville farm, were exhibited in several of the states east of the Rocky mountains. Never before had apples of such size been seen in those parts, and people wondered what next. In public affairs he took a lively interest - an interest not narrow and selfish, but a broad and enlightened view calculated to benefit the community and state. He was honored and respected by his neighbors as an upright, christian man. His integrity was never questioned. For many years before his death he was a member of and a communicant in the Methodist Episcopal church. Besides his wife, he leaves a son and two daughters. The son is a successful practicing physician in Jacksonville, Oregon. The eldest daughter is married to a leading druggist in Salem; and the younger (Mary) is at home. The funeral of deceased, conducted by Rev. Mr. Denison of the M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. P. S. Knight was from the residence of his son-in-law, Dr. Weatherford, in Salem, on Sunday last. Thus one by one, full of years, bearing the honors of true manhood, do our fathers go before. May we who linger a little longer be as well prepared to receive our summons as was our esteemed friend and neighbor, Nathan Robinson.
