OBITUARY:
SUICIDE AT SEATTLE.
Mrs. Kothenbeuthel, Who Used to Live in Salem, Poisoned Herself at Seattle yesterday.
Yesterday afternoon the Statesman received a special dispatch conveying the information that Mrs. Paul Kothenbeuthel, formerly of Salem, had committed suicide at Seattle at 10 o’clock that morning by taking poison. She was a sister of Robert Ford, and the first wife of Gaines Fisher, both of this city. The telegram states that she accused her husband of setting fire to their house, that was burned here in 1885, for the purpose of collecting the insurance. Concerning the burning of their house in Salem the Statesman of May 14, 1885, contained the following report, under the head of "Fire": "At about 3 o’clock yesterday morning fire broke out in the house belonging to Mrs. L. V. Kottenbottle, [sic] corner of Commercial and Division streets. Mrs. Kottenbottle was the sole occupant of the house and raised an alarm.
Despite the unseasonable hour the department was out in good shape. No 3’s got out their cart and hand engine, and had two streams of water playing before Tiger’s engine arrived, as it was some distance. The house and furniture were insured with Gilbert Bros. In the Royal, Norwich, Union and Lancashire companies for $1600. The building was badly burned and most of the furniture injured by fire and water. The origin of the fire is not known. The engines got water from the race nearby. The husband of the lady is in Portland." At the time of the fire it was thought by some to be the work of an incendiary but as no evidence could be obtained the insurance was paid on the furniture, $400 in full, and $900 on the house which was damaged to that extent. Mrs. Kotheneuthel’s maiden name was Loudemia Victoria Ford. She being a sister of Robert Ford of this city, she was the first wife of Gaines Fisher, also of Salem. But they were divorced after a short time. The result of their union, however, was a son, Gaines Fisher, who is now living at Portland, aged 24 years. The house which she alleges was burned by her husband, stood at the corner of Commercial and Division streets, on the north side of the race. While they lived here her husband was employed as a bartender. The woman’s remains will be brought to this city for interment, arriving possible by the evening train.
