OBITUARY:
FORMER BEAUTY DIES IN SALEM
Adelaide Scriber, who 60 years ago was considered on of the most handsome women of Salem and who took the part of "Goddess of Liberty" for the Fourth of July celebrations, passed away Tuesday at the residence, 1010 Oak Street. Despite her beauty Miss Scriber never married, although she adopted two children many years ago--Virginia Scriber of Salem, and Max Scriber of Alaska. The daughter of pioneer parents, the father being a well known blacksmith in south Salem many years ago, and the mother a sister of Lou Griffith, Miss Scriber was graduated from Willamette university in 1876. Later she took post-graduate work at the Moravian school, Bethlehem, Pa. For some time she taught school at Salem, N.C., and then returned to Salem.
Following her return to Salem and after the death of a sister, Mrs. Frederick Holbrook of Montana, Miss Scriber purchased the old home ranch near Willard in the Waldo Hills. She lived on this place up until a few years ago.
It was while living on the home ranch that she adopted her two children. In addition to her adopted children Miss Scriber is survived by a brother, Charles E. Scriber of Colfax, Wash, and two cousins, Mrs. Helen Paget and Mrs. J. C. Currie, both of the Willard district.6 Funeral services will be held from Rigdon’s chapel Thursday at 2:p.m. with Rev. David Leach officiating minister. Interment will be in the IOOF cemetery.

She returned to Salem about 30 years ago, where she lived for five years before returning to her farm in the Waldo Hills.
About the same time she adopted a son, Max, who now resides in Juneau, Alaska. Later Miss Scriber adopted a daughter, Virginia, now a senior in Salem high school. Three years ago Miss Scriber returned to Salem for a year and then went to the home of Mrs. Lorena Thompson near Pratum, where she and Virginia Scriber have made their home since. A brother, Jeff Scriber, died at the home of Mrs. Helen Paget Feb. 9. Survivors include her foster children, Max and Virginia; two cousins, Mrs. Helen Paget, Mrs. J. C.
