COLONEL ABRAMS to CAMP LEWIS -- Officer Commanding 381st Infantry Is Called to Tranining Service -- Col. Carle Abrams, commanding officer of the 381st infantry of the 96th division of the United States Army, leaves today for Camp Lewis where the regiment of which he is commander, with a commission in the reserve officers corps, will be in training for the next two weeks.
The call to active duty for the coming two weeks came from Col. P. Whitworth, chairman of the staff of the 96th division. Col. Abrams on his discharge from the regular service accepted a commission in the reserves with the rank of colonel The regiment of which he is in cmmand is composed of officers only -- a skelton regiment with officers but no men.
Col. W. E. Finzer, former adjutant general for Oregon and well know in Salem, is second in command with a commission of lieutenant colonel. The intensive training for the officers will close July 23.
Colonel Abrams with Mrs. Abrams and their two children Betty and Bob, will leave Salem this morning for Portland. Mrs. Lois Greene of Bellingham and Miss Lettia Abrams of Roseburg, sisters of Colonel Abrams, will accompany them to Portland. Mrs. Abrams will drive back to Salem accompanied by Miss Abrams and the children.

GEN. ABRAMS DIES FOLLOWING SHORT ILLNESS
Gen. Carle Abrams, prominent Salem military, business and civic leader, died Saturday in a local hospital. He was 86. He had been hospitalized for a week, following a hear attack. Abrams was a former newspaper publisher, state legislator and state official. For the past 30 years he was engaged in the real estate business in Salem.
A veteran of the Spanish American War, the Phillipine Insurrection, the Mexican Border War and World War I, he was active for more than a half century in Oregon veteran organizations. When he retired from military activities in 1950 he was commissioned a brigadier general on the reserve list of Oregon National Guard.
He leaves the widow, Myrtle, and a son and daughter in Salem. Services will be next Wednesday.

CARLE ABRAMS DIES at AGE 86.
Services for Carle Abrams, 86, widely known Salem military and community leader who died Saturday, will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at W. T. Rigdon funeral chapel. Abrams left Salem four times to fight in his nation's wars. His long career included holding many public offices and activities in a host of business, civic and veteran groups. Abrams was born near Lincoln in Polk County. His father Lewis Abrams, was an Oregon pioneer. His mother's father, Joshua Witten, settled a section of what is now Portland. He interrupted his college career at Oregon State College to fight in the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection. He graduated from OSC in 1900. He served with the old third Oregon Regiment on the Mexican border in 1916. A year later Lt. Col. Abrams was elevated to second in command of the Third Oregon when it was mobilized for World War I in 1917. He served overseas. Later Abrams was co-publisher of the Oregon Statesman for 28 years until 1930. He was a member of the Oregon Legislature in 1911 and 1933 sessions, and a member of the State Industrial Accident Commission 1915-1917. He also served as secretary to the Board of Control and State Budget Director. He was married in Salem in 1914 to Myrtle Duncan, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert C. Abrams, and a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth E. Skinner, both of Salem, and two grandchildren. Abrams was a member of First Methodist Church, Salem Rotary Club, Spanish American War Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. In 1955 Gen. Abrams was honored on the occasion of completing his 50th year as Salem YMCA Board member. He represented the Secretary of the Army during U.S. Navy maneuvers in the Pacific in 1949. He resided at 1547 Chemeketa St. NE. He was much in demand as a speaker at reunion activities of many Oregon military units, some of which he had a long personal association.
