OBITUARY: Mrs. Mary Scriber was born in Missouri about the year 1831. Came to Oregon in 1850, crossing the plains with ox teams in one of those cholera seasons. Arriving late in the fall they came down the Columbia river in canoes and batteaus. The family stopped that winter at old Fort Vancouver, where Mary Griffith made the acquaintance of Charles Scriber, a very intelligent young mechanic who had charge of the smithing at the fort. This acquaintance developed into a marriage union which proved to be a blessing to all concerned, not only to relatives, but out of it have come able men and women who have helped to mould the social, business and educational interests of the whole Northwest.
The Griffith family, after recovering somewhat from the weary trip over the plains, began to look for a place to build up a western home. This choice was located in the Waldo Hills in Marion county, where it proved the leading influence in settling the young married couple also on a home near them. This first home of Charles and Mary Scriber they sold, investing in land on the State road leading south from Silverton, which home is still owned by the family. Aunt Mary Scriber, as she was familiarly known in her Waldo Hills home and among her old time friends, was aunt and mother to everybody. A strange little child could not have its tender feelings wounded without attracting a sympathetic response from dear old aunt Mary which seldom failed to bring quiet and smiles out of trouble. She was nearly always present at preaching and prayer services and her invocations and testimonies were an inspiration to all who heard and knew her. Many, many, no doubt, have been turned from the paths of sin and started Heavenward by hearing her appeals for higher and more noble lives.
Rest, Aunt Mary, rest in the enjoyment of that bliss which I believe is in reserve for all people leading similar lives. As we stand at the portals of Heaven, peering through the pearly gates, we shall look for you moving among those whose lives have been blessed by your living."
(newspaper clipping, undated, unnamed, but signed "J. H." probably John Hunt)
