OBITUARY:
JOHNSON -- At the county poor farm near Salem, Tuesday, November 7, 1893, from rectal trouble, George B. Johnson, aged about 63 years. The remains will be laid to rest today in the Rural cemetery, the services to be held at 12 o'clock at the poor farm.
George B. Johnson came from Missouri about forty years ago and lived in Salem ever since he came west. He engaged himself in the sign-writing business as soon as he arrived in Salem and continued in that line up to a year or so ago.
He had an extended acquaintance here having been widely known for his good qualities and intellectual ability. Judge John Burnett of Corvallis is a cousin of the deceased. In Missouri he has relatives but none on this coast so far as can be ascertained other than Judge Burnett. He has been ailing for about a year and a half. Last May no hopes whatever were entertained for his recovery and it is almost a miracle that he lived as long as he did. As soon as he was fully convinced his disease was incurable he at once declared he wanted to die, and several times attempted to take his life. It will be remembered that he secreted a pistol under his pillow only a few weeks ago, awaiting an opportunity to use it upon himself. It was discovered, before he was enabled to use it, and as soon as it was taken from him he went into a great rage exclaiming that he would now be obliged to suffer until death came to relieve his intense suffering. He on several occasions implored his friends to bring him poison that he might end his "miserable" existence.
