1860 OR CENSUS - James Chitwood, age 64, occupation farmer, b. North Carolina, is enumerated with Elvira [Elisa?], age 62, b. North Carolina, along with B. R., male, age 31, b. Indiana, and S. P., female, age 22, b. Illinois.
DEATH CERTIFICATE: 
OBITUARY: 
At his residence, two miles from Salem, in Polk county, May 15th, 1865, James Chitwood, aged 70 years. Born in the State of North Carolina, in 1795, emigrated to Indiana 1812, was married 1815, removed to the State of Illinois 1829, from thence to Iowa 1845, crossed the plains to California 1850, visiting Oregon the same season, returned to Iowa 1852, and crossed the plains again with his family in 1853, settled near Salem where he lived until his death. He was a firm believer in Christianity, having been a member of some branch of the church for over a half century.
