OBITUARY:
Another Victim Accidentally Shot
Curtis Ogle, son of Jacob Ogle, Esq., was accidentally shot while duck hunting near this city, yesterday, while crawling along in what is called a "dead furrow." By some unexplained circumstance his gun was discharged, lodging the whole charge of BB shot in the side of our young friend. It is feared he cannot live. Drs. Payton & Sharpless were at once summoned to his aid, and we hope they may be able to save him.
Weekly Oregon Statesman 23 February 1877 6:1

In Salem, Oregon, Feb. 20, 1877, Curtis Howard, son of Jacob and Martha A. Ogle, in the 17 year of his age.
He was born June 28, 1860, in Adams County, Illinois, where he resided with his parents till September, 1870, when the entire family removed to Salem, Oregon.
He was converted at the early age of twelve and united with the M. E. Church, in Salem, of which he remained a member till his death. He was unusually mature for his years both in body and mind, and very energetic and self-reliant, and for this reason, he was peculiarly a dependence of his parents, who are heavily stricken in their sudden loss. His death was accidental and sudden. He was out gunning, and was passing through a thicket, in a crouching posture, dragging his gun after him, when it accidentally discharged and the contents entered his lungs. After some little delay his comrade secured a conveyance, and he was taken to the house, a mile away. He survived about nine hours, and was conscious to the last. But the grace he had so early sought, sustained him, and gave him a peaceful, triumphant end. His mother bade him sleep. He replied, "I shall not sleep till I sleep in Jesus." It pained him to see his parents and brothers so sorrowful on his account. He besought them not to weep for him, as they should surely meet again, and quietly fell asleep, another example of the uncertainty of life, and the power of
Christian faith over the terrors of the tomb.  F. P. Tower, Salem, Oregon, March 1877
