"The moving spirit in the promotion and organization of the Pioneer Oil company had been Joseph Holman, of the famous 1839-40 immigration from Peoria, Ills. Holman, newly arrived by foot, had seen the passengers land from the Lausanne at Fort Vancouver, and as Almira Phelps, teacher, one of the members of the party, walked down the gangplank, he whispered to a companion, "That is the lady I intend to marry." A year or so later, he secured the lady's consent and fulfilled his wish. Their daughter became the wife of the late John. H. Albert and the mother of the late Joseph Albert."
From: Oregon Statesman 26 May 1940 (Bits for Breakfast, by R. J. Hendricks).
BIOGRAPHICAL:
Almira Phelps Holman, the subject of this memoir, was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, May 19th, 1814, and died in Salem, Oregon, October 16th, 1871, aged 60 years and 6 months.
She was converted to God at an early age, and joined the M. E. Church, in which Church she lived until called to the communion of the Church triumphant, which is without fault before the Throne.
Her history is fully identified with the history of the M. E. Church in this country. Responsive to the call of duty and the call of the Church, she became one of the little band of Missionaries, who left New York October 9th, 1839, for the then almost unknown land of Oregon, for the purpose of christianizing the wild men of the Pacific Slope, and arrived in Oregon on the 20th day of May, 1840. She remained in the mission work about three years and a half.
She was married to her now bereaved husband, Mr. Joseph Holman, May 6th, 1841. Sister H., having the advantage of a liberal education, received at the Wilbarham Academy, in her native State, was not only qualified to teach the heathen, but also to take her place in the front ranks of Christian civilization, and in the growth and development of the country, may be seen on all sides monuments of Christian enterprise in which her hands have been busied in founding and supporting.
The M. E. Church in Salem, the Willamette University and the Orphans’ Home have all shared in her liberality. In her religious views, she was a thorough Methodist, endorsing fully the doctrine of a higher life - the power of Christ to save now from all sin. She not only believed this doctrine, but professed to experience its power to save her.
Her death was occasioned by congestion of the brain, which so affected her mind that she could not converse intelligently much of the time. On one occasion, when consciousness had returned, in answer to the inquiry of her son if she did not think she would get better, she replied, "Not until I get up to heaven." To a friend who entered her room, she said, "I am almost over." At 9½ o’clock, on the evening of October 16th, she fell asleep in Jesus. Peace to her memory. P. M. Starr
