OBITUARY: 

Frances Mary McNerney. April 19, 1914 - June 7, 1994. 
Frances Mary McNerney, 80, of Salem died Tuesday in Salem Hospital of a stroke. She was born in Seattle and grew up in Pasadena, Calif. She attended the Univerisity of California, Berkley. During World War II, she became the first woman to become a sergeant in the Pasadena Police Department. She was a descendant of Oregon pioneer John Minto and moved to Salem in 1946 to farm a portion of the Minto land grant. She began working for Fairview Training Center in April 1961. After her retirement in December 1976, she continued to work with the mentally retarded by volunteering with the Garten Foundation. 
Survivors include her nephews, Christopher J. Grieb of Washington, D. C., and Bennett J. Grieb of California; and nieces, Molly MacGowan and Sandra Kitzmann, both of California, and Gretchen Bordelon of Virginia. Memorial services will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday in Virgil T. Golden mortuary. Private interment will be in Salem Pioneer cemetery.
