OBITUARY:
SHOCKING ACCIDENT; James McDonald Loses his Life by Falling from a Tree South of Salem A very shocking accident occurred on the farm of G. H. Croisan, three miles south of this city, on Monday, which resulted in the death of James McDonald. McDonald had been chopping wood for Mr. Croisan for some time, and Monday he started to fell a tree. The tree was rough and knotty around the butt, and McDonald climbed up among the first branches, laid some poles from one set of limbs to another and started to cut the tree by standing on the poles, He was chopping away when one of the poles slipped and he fell heavily to the ground, a distance of about twelve feet, striking with his full weight on his back and shoulders. The fall dislocated his spine, and he was at once paralyzed from the shoulders down. He lived, however, until 2 o'clock yesterday morning.
The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. on Monday. McDonald was about 54 years of age and came here about the first of September last from Olequa, Washington Territory, where he has a married daughter living. He leaves no property with the exception of about enough to pay expenses of laying his body in its last resting place.
