OBITUARY:
A DAY OF MOURNING.
The messenger of Death visited this city on Sunday last and claimed three of her well-known citizens. His first call was at No. 392 Cottage street, where he summoned the spirit of J.W. Morrill during the forenoon hours. Impressive funeral services were conducted over the remains of the late J. W. Morrill, at the First Baptist church at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. Ronald McKillop, officiating. Mr. Morrill died at his home, corner of Marion and Cottage streets, at 8:30 Sunday morning, May 14, 1899, aged 59 years, after a brief illness.
On the 8th inst., Mr. Morrill contracted a severe cold, which developed into pleuro-pneumonia, from which he died as above stated. His condition was not considered serious until last Friday evening and although the best of medical attendance and faithful nursing was procured, he succumbed to the exhausting effects of the deadly combination of ailments, passing into the sleep that knows no awaking, at the hour before mentioned.
The funeral was largely attended by the friends of the deceased. Rev. McKillop read a scriptural passage from 1st Thessalonians, fourth chapter. His text was Psalm 127, verse 2: "It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows, for so he giveth his beloved sleep," and 1st Thessalonians, fourth chapter, 14th verse, "For if - we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him." From the above texts, Rev. McKillop delivered a brief, but comforting funeral discourse. He said "the sleep of the dead," and "asleep in Jesus," were equivalent terms, and in support of his assertion advanced a good argument.
Special music was furnished by a quartet consisting of Mrs. H. S. Gile, Miss Hart, W. T. Jenks and Mr. Hendrson, Mrs. R. H. Leabo presiding at the organ. The remains were buried in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, the grave being covered with beautiful floral offerings. Those serving as pall-bearers were: D. L. Green. J.B.T. Tuthill, Charles Calvert, A.T. Yeaton, William Staiger and W. L. Wade. Joseph Warren Morrill was born at Salisbury, Massachusetts, February 12, 1840, where he lived until 1875, when he came to Oregon, settling in Salem, where he has since resided.
When a young man he went to Boston, where he learned his trade, that of a marble cutter. While there he was married to Miss Mary Angle Crane, October 28, 1863, who, with two daughters, survives him. The daughters are: Mrs. E.E. Harritt, of this city, and Mrs. W.W. Brooks, of Portland. Upon arriving in Salem in 1875 the deceased entered the employ of Wm. Staiger, the local marble dealer, with whom he remained for several years. At an early age he united with the First Baptist church, in which organization he was an active and consistent member. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity.
