IOOF - E. J. Colbath, died in Salem on Asylum Ave. of paralysis, was a kind and affectionate husband and father. DANGEROUSLY ILL. E. J. Colbath of Asylum avenue, is dangerously ill as a result of a stroke of paralysis suffered last fall. So serious was his condition last evening that his son, Deputy Sheriff B. B. Colbath, last evening telegraphed to another son, J. H. Colbath, at Roseburg, asking his attendance at the bedside of the patient. J. H. Colbath is with the Southern Pacific depot construction force. His arrival is expected this morning.

OBITUARY: 
A DAY OF MOURNING. 
The messenger of Death visited this city on Sunday last and claimed three of her well-known citizens - the soul of E.J. Colbath, of Asylum avenue, separated itself from the body, at his bidding. About seven months ago, Elijah Jackson Colbath was taken ill at his home on Asylum avenue, and today his body lies cold in death, his life becoming extinct at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 14th. 
He was a native of Gardner, Maine, and was born on June 9, 1833. During his youth he followed life as a sailor and in 1858 he started for the California coast, coming as a ship carpenter; landing in San Francisco he remained a brief time and them proceeded to Salem, where he engaged in the manufacturing of sashes and doors and lumber, with Samuel Bass; his mill was damaged by the flood in the Willamette. He became the husband of Miss Gabrielle Hayden, on July 1, 1860; she being a sister of Hon. Benjamin Hayden and Mrs. G. C. Clark. The wife and five children survive him, the latter being J.H. Colbath, now of Roseburg; B.B. Colbath, a deputy sheriff of Marion county; Nathaniel, Alfred, and Camilla, at the family home. Mr. Colbath was well-known as a millwright, and was a very public-spirited citizen; he was numbered among the volunteer firemen of the Capital City, and also a member of Valley Lodge, A.O.U.W. Rev. P.S. Knight will conduct the funeral at the family home at 2 p.m. today.
