Dr. BELT - The aged and able Doctor has ceased his wanderings, and come back to his old stamping ground. For thirty-six years he has plied the healing art, with honor to himself and incalculable benefit to the afflicted. He is still on the list of practitioners, and will need no recommendation from us.

DEATH CERTIFICATE:

OBITUARY:

We must pause to offer a word to the memory of our fraternal dead. That still small voice came to us, as it always does when we are least able to bear it, announcing the deaths of Past Grand Master, Bro. A. M. Belt; Past Grand Senior Deacon, Bro. M.V. Brown, and Past Grand Secretary, W. S. Caldwell. At the announcement of the death of Bro. Belt, we felt that our lines were broken indeed. He had been so long and regular an attendant on the Grand Lodge, and one of its early Grand officers, that his departure now, though at a ripe age is a loss to our brethren.
He died on the 18th of August, 1881. Our Brother Alfred Metcalf Belt, was born at Flemingsburg, Fleming county, Kentucky, July 23, 1804.
From Kentucky, he moved to Missouri in 1840, from thence he came to Oregon in 1850.
Brother Belt settled with his family in Salem, Oregon, where for over a quarter of a century he practiced his profession with great success. He was Surgeon General of Oregon, covering the period of her Indian wars during her territorial dependency. He filled many offices, professional and otherwise, with credit and honor to himself. In 1852, our brother gathered the scattered members of our order found within the local jurisdiction of Salem, now the capital of the state, and in the face of great prejudice, and a vast amount of uncharitableness against Masonry, established, with their co-operation, Salem Lodge of Masons, No. 4. Bro. Belt was elected the first Master of Salem Lodge and was the fourth Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Oregon, having previously filled the stations of Grand Treasurer, Senior and Junior Grand Wardens, and Deputy Grand Master. The educational fund of the Grand Lodge was established by Brothers Belt, Jennings and Ainsworth in 1853.
The lodge at Kirbyville takes the name of our brother. He was a constant attendant upon the Grand Communications of this Grand Lodge, and at our last meeting our brother occupied his post at the right of the Most Worshipful Grand Master. Our brethren will remember him while at his place among those who have been honored by the highest gift within your power to bestow. But that place is now vacant in the Grand East.
We shall remember him as a faithful Mason, patient, kind in manner and wise in counsel. He was honest with all men. He was a citizen without reproach. He had passed the bounds of three-score years and ten, in love, and in peace with all above and with all below.
He leaves his aged consort and children, relatives and brethren to mourn his loss. He was buried by Salem Lodge No. 4. Past Grand Master Brother R. P. Earhart conducted the beautiful ceremony. The attendance was very large, consisting of brethren and citizens who in their own grief evinced deep sympathy for the family who were mourning their final separation from our brother on earth.
