BIOGRAPHICAL (Courtesy of John D. Richert):

John Clinton Berry’s early years were spent in Indiana as his family moved successively further north eventually settling in Andersonton in Madison County. John married Sarah Collins in (likely) Indiana or (possibly) Kentucky in the latter half of the 1820’s. The 1830 US Census seemingly placed him in Jackson Twp, Wayne Co, IN. In the 1840 and 1850 US Census the family of JC Berry was in Marion, Linn Co, IA where he was a merchant. John went to California in search of gold with his two oldest sons in 1850. The 1852 California Census found the three of them as miners in Placer County. John returned home in 1853 a much wealthier man and moved his family from Marion, Linn Co, IA to Victory, Town of Wheatland, Bad Ax Co, WI. John C. Berry opened a store in Victory in 1854 and sold general merchandise along with being the first postmaster there. His daughter Nancy opened the first school in one of his barns and charged 25 cents per pupil for a school term. In the 1860 US Census he stated he was a merchant and reported a net worth 20 times that which he had reported in 1850. He was a wheat buyer and was part owner of a bank in Lansing, Allamakee, IA with his son-in-law, GW Gray. GW Gray’s company apparently sold wheat to the Confederacy during the Civil War which presumably gave them cause to leave Iowa and move to Oregon at the war’s end. In 1865 John C Berry moved his extended family to Salem, Marion Co, OR and lived there the rest of his life. John Clinton Berry died on 6 Jan 1882 in Salem, Marion Co, OR. He was buried at Salem Pioneer Cemetery.
