OBITUARY:
SWIMMER DIES.
J. G. Blaine Drowns - Was To Marry Next Sunday.
Young Blacksmith of Salem Loses Life While Bathing in Willamette River - Was One of Party of 14.
Drowned just a week before his wedding day was the fate which befell J. G. Blaine, aged 33 years, a blacksmith at the fair grounds, whose body was found yesterday morning about 11 o'clock near the Chinese landing north of the city. W. M. Ralph, Louis Craven and George Buckingham, friends of the deceased, grappled in the river until late Sunday night and all yesterday morning in the hope of recovering the body. Was One of Party.
Blaine was one of a party of fourteen men from the fair grounds who went up the river in the launch Laura B. Sunday morning to spend the day. He was an excellent swimmer and while bathing had crossed the river several times when he suddenly called for help. A few minutes later he began swimming again and the men on the bank, thinking he was joking did not go to his assistance. Before they realized the situation Blaine sank and did not come to the top again. The accident happened about 4 o'clock in the afternoon.
Was Native Californian.
Blaine came to Oregon from California and was employed on the new pavilion at the fair grounds. He was engaged to marry Miss Mary Spriggs, of the fair grounds, and the wedding was to have been solemnized next Sunday.
