BIOGRAPHICAL:
A tree in Salem grows.  Not just any tree but a very special tree.  My grandmother planted the tree 107 years ago to honor the memory of a baby daughter who died a tragic death at the age of 10 months.  The tree still exists in the family plot at Pioneer Cemetery.  The baby was Mabel Fay Burdick, born Aug. 8, 1899, and died May 3, 1900.  Mabel, was one of eight children.  The baby died at home and records indicate she died of spinal meningitis.  However, shortly before she died, two of her sisters had taken the baby for a ride in her carriage and on a steep hill they let the carriage run loose, planning to run alongside.  Unfortunately, the run away carriage flipped, baby and all.  Seventy-seven years later, one of the sisters, my aunt, told me they realized they were responsible for the baby being ejected from the carriage and her ultimate death.  They believed their mother covered for them in an attemp to ease the guilt the children felt.
