MRS. CARPENTER TAKEN By DEATH.
Widow of First Superintendent of Asylum Passes Away at Age of 85 - Funeral Will be Held From the A. E. Strang Residence.
Mrs. Sarah A. Carpenter died at the Salem hospital at 8 o’clock last evening, aged 85 years, 6 months and 20 days.
Deceased was the widow of Dr. Horace Carpenter, the first superintendent of the Oregon state asylum for the insane, whose death occurred in Salem twenty-six years ago.
Born in Indiana.
The maiden name of the deceased was Sarah A. Coshow. She was born in Indiana November 22, 1829. She was married to Dr. Carpenter in 1861. Dr. Carpenter was soon after appointed as army surgeon, stationed at Fort Hoskins, Oregon, and Fort Lapwai, Idaho.
Having come to Salem, where he took up the practice of medicine, Dr. Carpenter was appointed the first superintendent of the Oregon asylum for the insane, when the patients were removed from the private asylum at East Portland.
Deceased is survived by five grandchildren, H. C. Brodie of Portland, R. C. Brodie of Canby, R. K. Brodie of Corvallis, Miss DeEtta Brodie of Portland, and Jessup Strang of Salem, and by two sisters, Mrs. S. R. Jessup of Eugene, and Mrs. Edith Keyes of Portland.
                                                           ----Was Noble Woman----
Mrs. Carpenter was a noble woman, loved by all the old-time residents of Salem, and by many throughout Oregon. Hers was a long and useful life, connected with many of the forward movements of this commonwealth in the formation days of its history.
The funeral will be held at the residence of A. E. Strang, 3003 East Center street, tomorrow (Sunday), and the Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

FUNERAL TODAY. The funeral services of the late Mrs. Sarah A. Carpenter will be held today at 2 p.m. from the residence of A. R. Strang, 3003 East Center street. Rev. Harry E. Marshall will officiate. The interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
