OBITUARY:  DEAD CHINAMAN BURIED BY HIS COUNTRYMEN ACCORDING TO THEIR CUSTOM. -- Ung Cheng, the Chinaman who died Thursday evening at the Florence Sanatorium, was buried yesterday afternoon in the Odd Fellows cemetery. He was but recently from California, where he had been living for the past forty years, and at the time of his sudden illness was cutting hop poles for a Chinaman in Polk county.  He was stricken with apoplexy in the afternoon, and died at 8:30 about one and one-half hours after reaching the sanatorium.   His countrymen joined in a burial service as interesting as ridiculous to the average American. The preliminary ceremony was held at Clough’s undertaking parlors, where torches were burned, and incantations repeated to drive away the devil.  A Chinaman rode with the driver on the hearse and scattered perforated paper along the way, to keep the devils from following, and at the grave, where a large number of his countrymen gathered, strange ceremonies were observed.  Rice, chicken and other eatables were scattered over the grave to feed the dead man, and rum was poured in the grave with much moaning and bowing and casting themselves on the ground.  Torches were left to light the grave and send the dead man’s spirit on its way without being interfered with by the devil.
