Battles Admits Driving Car Figuring in Case Says Deputy Attorney
Death overtook Wa Hong, pioneer Salem Chinese, at 11:55 o'clock yesterday morning as he lay in Deaconess hospital. He was unconscious the last few of his living hours after having lingered on in semi-consciousness since last Saturday night when he was struck down by an automobile in front of his noodle house at 255 Ferry street. None of Hong's white or Chinese friends had come forward last night to make funeral arrangements, but there was talk among them of giving the 85-hyear old oriental a fitting burial. The body was at the Clough-Barrick mortuary.
Hong's death will not necessarily result in the filing of an involuntary manslaughter charge against Everett Battles, 24-year old cigar store clerk whom city police charge with having driven the car that fatally injured the Chinaman, Lyle J. Page, deputy district attorney, stated last night. Present evidence, he said, indicates that the mishap was accidental, leaving the only charge against Battles one of failing to stop and render aid. Battles has admitted that he drove the death car, Page said. The young man was free yesterday, having posted $2000 undertaking for bail to obtain his release from county jail. He will receive a preliminary hearing in justice court at 2 p.m. Monday. The deputy district attorney refuted rumors that Battles had last Monday wrecked the car near Canby. Battles had only borrowed the machine last Saturday night and had returned it to the owners before it was wrecked, Page said. According to the deputy, Battles on the night of the accident pulled out from a parking space in the 100 block on South Commercial street, turned west on Ferry and ran into Hong, then continued west to Front and north on Front.
