BIOGRAPHICAL:

OBITUARY:
Seth R. Hammer, the veteran lawyer, and old pioneer of Salem has passed away after a lingering illness lasting since the middle of November. About that time Mr. Hammer had an attack of la grippe from which he never recovered, the dread malady, as usual, leaving its bad effects and settling on the weakest parts. These complications together with scirrhosis of the liver were the direct cause of death.
Mr. Hammer was born in Sangamon county Illinois September 9th 1832 and was a resident of that state until he came to Oregon in 1858 where he settled in Salem. He was employed as a clerk in the store of Jones and Read, situated in the block now occupied by the Journal office.
In 1861, Mr. Hammer enlisted in Company A., First Oregon Cavalry, Captain Harding commanding, was appointed first lieutenant. In 1863 he was appointed regimental commissary and served in that capacity until 1865. Since that time Mr. Hammer has resided continually in Salem and has been notary public and conveyancer of deeds, being admitted to the bar in 1881. He was mostly employed in probate work and collections and was respected and trusted by all who had any dealings with him as a man of sterling honesty and fair dealing.
The deceased was a bachelor and leaves no relatives in this state, all his folks, as far as known, residing in the old home state of Illinois. One brother, W. L. Hammer, of Decatur, Ill., is a physician, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Northcutt, resides at Forest, Ill. Another brother has preceded the deceased to the grave, dying a few years ago.
Amos Strong received a letter from Dr. Hammer on Thursday, inquiring about the health of his brother, and was telegraphed the sad news of his death. Mr. Strong received a telegram this morning directing that the deceased be buried here. Mr. Hammer was formerly a member of the Masons and of several orders but a few years ago practically broke his affiliations with them. The Bar association, of which he is a member, held a meeting this afternoon at 3 o’clock at which it was decided that they would take charge of the funeral services. The Exempt Fireman’s Association will in all probability, also have a part in the ceremonies.
The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Rev. Geo. W. Grannis, who was an old friend of Mr. Hammer, will conduct them if he can come over from McMinnville, if not other arrangements will be made. Capital Journal 2 December 1898 3:3
