Congregational Church is Scene of Accident -- Man Expires.
Pastor’s Wife Hears Groans Near the House and Telephones the Police -- Injuries Seemingly Not Serious at First End Fatally.
An accident occurred probably about 9 o’clock Wednesday evening near the Congregational church that cost the life of E. L. Ballah, a man about forty years of age.
It seems that Mrs. Perry F. Schrock, wife of the pastor of the church, upon retiring at 9 o’clock, heard groans from the vicinity of the alley that runs one side of the church building. The groans were repeated and Mrs. Schrock telephoned to the police station for help.
Patrolmen Whitlatch and Murphy responded and found a man lying on the ground at the foot of a flight of steps. Undoubtedly he had fallen down while attempting to descend the steps. Picking the man up, the officers found that he could walk with their aid and the three started for the station. When within a few rods of the police station, Bellah collapsed and had to be carried the rest of the way.
Dr. O.B. Miles was summoned and upon examination concluded that the injuries were not very serious. He dressed the wounds and the man was laid on a cot in the station. At 5 o’clock yesterday morning Night Sergeant Nelson left for home with Ballah apparently resting comfortably. At 8 in the morning when the officers arrived he was dead.
A postmortem examination was held by Coroner Clough, who found that a serious fracture of the skull had been received. Not much is known about the dead man as to his friends in this city. His wife has been communicated with and is on the way to Salem from Omaha, Neb., of which place Bellah was at one time a resident.
