BIOGRAPHICAL:
Takezo Nishimura was a bachelor who worked on the farm of Roy Kinzaboro Fukuda, a Salem resident originally from Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Fukuda would have been about 44 at the time of Nishimura's death. His son Frank who still lives in Salem, tells that Nishimura worked for his father and remembers sitting on Nishimura's lap while going with the Fukuda family to the Oregon coast. Nishimura must have been a favored worker to go with the family on a trip to the coast. In those days, that was at least a half day ride. Most Japanese used to stay two or three nights at a cottage in Netarts in August for gathering clams and crabs. Farming in the 1920s was extremely labor intensive, however Nishimura may not have died from hard work but due to some dread illness of the time that today is easily cured. Nishimura was originally buried up the hill west of where the Japanese section is now. Later his grave site was moved down to the Japanese section. (Letter of October, 29, 1992 from Tom Yoshikai of Salem, Oregon). Nishimura's niece (daughter of Nishimura's younger brother) lives in Oiso Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. (Letter of June, 29, 1992 from Takezo Nishimura's niece.)
