Falls From Raft in Pool Near Mute School While Playing With Companions - Pulmotor is Used
Errett Jass, a 16-year-old boy was drowned yesterday in the pool in the gravel pit a short distance orth of the mute schol when he in some manner fell from a raft upon which he and two other boys, Andrew Lence and Jacob Krebbs, were playing. The accident occurred about 1:40 p.m. but the body was not recovered for more than an hour later. The pulmotor was used for nearly an hour but without results. Unable to Swim. According to the story the Krebbs and Lence boys tell, the three were playing on the raft in a part of the pool where the water is from fifteen to twenty-five feet deep when the Jass boy dived or fell into the water. He was unable to swim but came to the surface three times and called for help. The other boys, however, could not swim and were unable to rescue him. As soon as they saw they could not help, the Krebbs and Lence boys went for aid, but the body was not recovered for nearly an hour and a half. Body Recovered. The fire department was summoned to bring the pulmotor a few moments after the accident but after waiting for about an hour returned to the station as no hope was held out then for the boyÂ’s life. Soon after, however, the body was found and the department went again with the pulmotor but despite constant effort for practically an hour life was not revived. Had the water been warmer it is believed there would have been a chance for the boy notwithstanding the long time under water but the water was very cold and the body chilled at once. Errett Jass lived at the home of his father A.M. Jass, 796 Columbia street.
