In Salem, at 9 a.m. Sat. December 13, 1890, at her residence on Center street, Miss Helen Leslie, in her 52d year. Helen Leslie was born on Mission bottom in Marion county, on the 1st day of June, 1839. Rev. David Leslie, who came to Oregon in 1837, was her father, he having passed to that unknown land several years ago. He was one of the founders of Willamette university, commencing his life as a resident of Salem in 1843. Miss Leslie spent some time after her motherÂ’s death (which occurred in 1841) in travel, visiting the Sandwich islands and other places. Her education was received in Willamette university and the most of her life was spent in Salem, a part of the time being a resident of Oregon City. From childhood she has been a member of the Methodist church here and was a devout Christian. Up to a few years ago she conducted a private school at her residence and many of SalemÂ’s young people received a portion of their first education through her labors. She was a lady of rare intelligence. She was one of the first white children born in Oregon. The only remaining member of the Leslie family is Mrs. Jenella J. Parker, formerly Jenella Jones, of this city, now residing in Idaho. The funeral will take place at the Methodist church this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock and the interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Rural cemetery, by the side of the remains of her father. She leaves many to mourn the death of a good Christian and a true friend. Rev. Cline, assisted by Rev. C. C. Stratton and W. S. Harrington in short addresses, will conduct the funeral services. Those who will act as pallbearers are Profs. Thomas Van Scoy, W. B. Arnold, and S. A. Starr, and J. H. Lunn, James Aitken, and W. F. Foster.
