OBITUARY:
FUNERAL of MRS. NESBITT.
The funeral service over the remains of the late Mrs. Maria Nesbitt, took place yesterday afternoon from the Episcopal church, and was largely attended by the friends of the deceased.
The remains, encased in a beautiful black walnut casket, were conveyed from the Institution of the Blind, of which Mrs. Nesbitt was matron, to the church, where they were deposited near the chancel, and covered with the floral offerings of sorrowful friends. Her late pupils were in attendance to pay the last rites of respect to their dear, departed friend. The services were opened by the choir, under the direction of Mr. D. W. Prentice, rendering the Burial Anthem. The services were conducted by Rev. T. W. Sellwood, of Oregon City, assisted by Rev. J. H. Babcock.
Mr. Sellwood preached a beautiful discourse, taking his text from the 12th verse, 90th Psalm, and dwelling at length on the many good traits of Christian character and kindness of heart which distinguished the deceased. At the conclusion of Mr. Sellwood's discourse Mr. Babcock led in prayer, after which the choir rendered the beautiful hymn "Asleep in Jesus." At half past 3 o'clock the bell tolled a solemn farewell, the cortege left the church, and wended its way through Commercial street to the cemetery beyond South Salem.
At the city of the dead the beautiful and impressive burial service of the Episcopal Church was performed, the Anthem "I heard a Voice"--was rendered by the choir, and all that was mortal of a noblehearted Christian lady was consigned to the cold and silent tomb.
