OBITUARY: At the home of his daughter, Mrs. Amos Strong, this city, Saturday evening, May 25th, 1889, Lewis Westacott. The deceased was born in Barnstable, England, February 27th, 1812, and moved to Prince Edward’s island with the family when a small boy. He became a cabinet maker and afterward took the seas as a ship carpenter, going out from Boston. He was engaged on the Rio Grande river when the goad excitement broke out and assisted in manning a vessel there for California, landing at San Francisco the 1st of May, 1849. He came to Oregon overland, ate his first meal in the state at Jessee Applegate’s in Southern Oregon arriving in Salem on the 1st day of March 1851. He made the furniture for the legislative assembly hall in its first session in this city and conducted a cabinet shop here for several years. Mrs. Westacott, to whom he was married in 1854, died the 10th of December, 1879, and the children of the union are William G., Richard, John, Louis, Mrs. Stapleton and Mrs. Amos Strong, all residents of this city except Louis, who has been in San Francisco a few days and will be home to-morrow morning. The funeral will occur to-morrow (Monday) at 2 o’clock p.m., services to be conducted at the residence of Mr. Strong, and interment in the Odd Fellows’ cemetery. Mr. Westacott was a good, honest man, and raised a family of boys and girls all of whom are a great credit to his memory. Aside from his old residence there are many ties that will hold him in pleasant recollection among Salem’s people. He was a member of the first hook and ladder company and of the first band in the city, and the old settlers cannot forget his old-time efforts to keep Salem abreast with the times. Mr. Westacott had reached a good old age, but there were none who expected to part with his familiar countenance from the streets so soon. Peace be to him. Daily Statesman 26 May 1889 4:3.
