BIOGRAPHICAL:
From Oregon Statesman 15 April 1875 3:2:
Jacob D. Brower, a deaf mute, the son of Elder David Brower, came into the composing rooms of the STATESMAN, Tuesday morning and with but a few words of instruction as how to space and justify the lines, committed to memory all the boxes of the capital and lower cases, and set up during the day from reprint, over 1,500 ems. There was scarcely an error in the matter set up. Taking into consideration that Mr. Brower had never set a type in his life before, the feat was a remarkable one."
CAN ANYONE GIVE THE INFORMATION ASKED? - Administrator of Estate wants to find a Family By Name of Brower. The mayor is in receipt of a letter from J. E. Schalabach of Millersburg, Ohio, asking for information as to the whereabouts of a family by the name of Brower. The letter, which is self-explanatory, is given below:
"Millersburg, Ohio, Aug. 27, 1911 - Mayor of Salem, Oregon - Dear Sir: I am trying to find the whereabouts of a family by the name of Brower. They moved to Oregon long ago. The old man Brower was a Dunkard preacher, but is dead. Some one told me they lived close to Salem, and that one of the preacher's sons was doing some kind of a business for the government in Salem about eight years ago. The Brower children's mother's maiden name was Saloma Yoder, daughter of Henry Yoder, of Wayne county Ohio, and they are heirs of the estate of Christian Raber, deceased. Any information will be highly appreciated. Thanking you in advance, I am, very truly yours, J. E. Schalabach, Administrator of the estate of Christian Raber, deceased."
