1920 OR CENSUS - John H. Albert, age 80, occupation banker, b. West Virginia, is enumerated with wife Elizabeth, age 59, b. Oregon.  Also enumerated is Mary Stitz, age 18, identified as maid, b. Wisconsin.

BIOGRAPHICAL: "The moving spirit in the promotion and organization of the Pioneer Oil company had been Joseph Holman, of the famous 1839/40 immingration from Peoria, Illinois. Holman, newly arrived by foot, had seen the passengers land from the Lausanne at Fort Vancouver, and as Almira Phelps, teacher, one of the members of the party, walked down the gangplank, he whispered to a companion, "That is the lady I intend to marry." A year or so later, he secured the lady's consent and fulfilled his wish. Their daughter became the wife of the late John. H. Albert and the mother of the late Joseph Albert."

SUBSIDIES RAISED -- The Journal is reliably informed that the Salem Motor Railway Company is offered $1000 by J. H. Albert to run its line on Winter and Oak streets and that enough other substantial subsides are ready to induce them to build their line through ther at once.

CAPT. HATCH DIES in SAN FRANCISCO -- Word was received yesterday of the death in San Francisco Thursday of Captain H. L. Hatch, 81, for many years a Salem resident. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Addie Hatch Farrar, 1438 North Cottage street, and nephew of John Farrar. Hatch came to Salem in 1861 from Oregon City. He was a building mover and at one time moved the former J. H. Albert residence over the trees in Willson park to its present location across from the Deaconess hospital. Captain Hatch introduced roller skating locally, operating rinks on South High street.

LONG, ACTIVE LIFE OF JOHN H. ALBERT IS CLOSED BY DEATH. 
John H. Albert, Salem banker and capitalist, whose life for more than half a century has been closely identified with the up-building of Salem and the state, died at his home, 670 South Winter street, at 11 o'clock a.m. yesterday at the age of 81 years. He was president of the Capital National bank of which he was one of the founders. 
Mr. Albert was born at Wheeling, West Virginia, February 8, 1839, and came to Oregon in 1865, and was a member of the firm of G. W. Gray & Co. until 1868, when he became identified with the Ladd and Bush bank, which was founded in that year, and was with that institution for 20 years, the latter part of the period as cashier. In 1884, with R. S. Wallace he founded the Capital National bank. Mr. Wallace was the first president of the bank. Mr. Albert was cashier until about 15 years ago, when he became president. 
Mr. Albert always avoided public office, but served Salem as councilman for several terms, and later was president of the old Salem Board of Trade. For several years prior to the enactment of the present state highway commission act he was a member of the board of advisors of the state highway department, a position he was persuaded to accept because of his deep interest in public highways. 
Mr. Albert had 10 brothers and sisters and he was the oldest of the 11 children. The first move made after leaving West Virginia was to Ohio where he was for a time a school teacher. Ten years later he moved to Iowa where with G. W. Gray he became engaged in the banking business. He was married into the Gray family. He was admitted to the practice of law at the early age of 18, but never followed the practice of that profession to any great extent. 
Mr. Albert was married three times. After the death of his first wife he was married to Miss Mary Holman, and some years following her death he was married to Miss Elizabeth McNary. The Masonic order was Mr. Albert's fraternal connection. He was a member of De Molay commandery, Knights Templar and of Al Kader temple of the Mystic Shrine. He was a charter member of the Presbyterian church of Salem. 
He is survived by his widow and by four children. The children are: Joseph H. Albert of Salem, Mrs. F. A. Wiggins of Toppenish, Washington; Mrs. George F. Rodgers of Salem and Harry E. Albert of Portland. Joseph Albert is cashier of the Capital National bank and Harry Albert is a federal bank inspector. Mr. Albert also is survived by four sisters and two brothers. They are Mrs. E. A. Holton, Mrs. S. R. Robinson, Mrs. C. D. Purdy and T. G. Albert of Salem; George W. Albert of Lansing, Iowa, and Mrs. G. A. Rockwell of Portland. The grandchildren are Mrs. Reuben Bens of Toppenish, Washington; Miss Margaret Rodgers, Miss Mary Jane Albert and Miss Josephine Albert of Salem. There are many nephews and nieces, some lifing in this vicinity and others in the eastern states. 
The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock, Saturday at the Albert residence, under the direction of Rigdon & Son, and interment will be in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. Mr. Albert retained his physical activity into his advanced years, and it was only in recent weeks that he was confined to his home by the weakness of age.

Some of the most prominent men in the state will attend and some of them will serve as honorary pallbearers at the funeral of John H. Albert, which will be held at the residence, 670 South Winter street, at 2:30 o'clock p.m. today. Rev. James Elvin will give the funeral address and interent will be in I. O. O. F. cemetery. Mrs. W. Carlton Smith, who as a personal friend of Mr. Albert, will sing. De Molay commandery, Knights Templar will form an escort. Honorary pallbearers will be J. K. Gill of Portland, John G. Wright, Ed. Croisan, Herbert Nunn, Dr. R. E. Lee Steiner, Governor Ben W. Olcott. A. N. Bush, I. L. Patterson, John H. McNary and B. J. Miles. Active pallbearers will be O. E. Krauss of Portland, C. A. Park, Dr. L. F. Griffith, David W. Eyre, William Walton, and S. B. Elliott.
