OBITUARY:

BODY OF AGED HERMIT FOUND

John [sic] Albing, 72, Dies Alone in Hut – Carried Receipts for $4000 in Bonds

Jacob Albing, a German who had lived in an old hut two miles south of the city on the Jefferson road was found dead lying across the wood box by some neighbors who were taking him some food. He was 72 years old. It is thought that his miserly ambition to save his earnings prompted him to do without the necessities of life which resulted in his death. He was found with his feet so badly frozen that the flesh had bursted in several places.

In his pockets were found receipts for about $4000 worth of liberty bonds and 22 cents in change. It is said that he had an account of $730 in one of the local banks. For several weeks the neighbors had been taking him food, because of his miserly habits. He was unmarried and no relatives are known,

Coroner Clough was called and upon investigation decided that no inquest was necessary, that death was due to natural causes. The body was taken to the Webb & Clough establishment where the body will be held pending the settlement of his business affairs.
