DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:

"GRANDPA" E. T. ALBERT IS DEAD.
Ebin Taylor Albert, Sr., known by all as "Grandpa" Albert, died at his home in this city, corner of Winter and Mill streets, at 1:30 o'clock this (Saturday) morning, aged 82 years, 8 months, and 12 days. General paralysis was the cause of his death.
"Grandpa" Albert was in general good health until Mrs. Albert was taken sick about a year ago, and the care and worry, incident thereto, was more than he could stand and in December, when Mrs. Albert had recovered from her protracted sickness, he collapsed physically. On December 9th, last, he suffered a stroke of paralysis and since then his health and strength gradually failed him. Mrs. Albert is considerably improved in health and is continually growing stronger.
The deceased was born at Winchester, Virginia, September 15, 1816 and when a young man he went west, residing for a brief time in Kentucky, but subsequently settled at Wheeling Virginia, where, on November 28, 1837, he married Jane G. Gilchrist, the daughter of an old Virginia pioneer, who, with eight of the ten children, survive him. The children, all but two of whom reside in Salem, and were present at the death bed, are: George W. Albert, Lansing, Iowa; Eben T. Albert Jr., Columbus, Ohio; Thomas G. Albert, Salem; Mrs. Elizabeth Helton, Mrs. Sarah Robinson, Mrs. Emma Rockwell, and Mrs. Anna Purdy, all of Salem.
He afterward removed to Ohio, where he resided at a number of places for several years, when he went to Iowa, locating at Lansing, where he lived for twenty-one years. The family subsequently resided for six years at Keokuk in the same state and came to Oregon in 1881, settling in Salem, where they have since resided continuously.
The deceased united at an early age with the Presbyterian church, in which denomination he has held the office of elder for fifty-two consecutive years, being at the time of his death senior elder of the First Presbyterian church of this city. He was always active in church work until his health became too impaired, obliging him to abandon, to an extent, his activity in religious work in the betterment of his fellow man. Funeral services will be conducted at the late home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, by Rev. H. A. Ketchum, of the First Presbyterian church. The remains will be given burial in the family lot in Rural cemetery.

EBEN TAYLOR ALBERT

Passes Away Saturday Morning, May 27, Sketch of His Life

Saturday morning, May 27, at 1:30 o’clock, “Grandpa” Albert passed away at the family home, corner of Mill and Winter streets.

The cause of death was paralysis, from which he had been suffering since last December, when he had a slight stroke, growing steadily worse ever since. For a couple of weeks past it has been seen that the end was not far off.

Eben Taylor Albert, Sr., was born at Winchester, Va., September 15, 1816, and was aged 82 years, 8 months and 12 days. He was the youngest son of George Albert, a native of Pennsylvania, descended from a German immigrant from near Nuremburg. While still a young man he went West, and visited different sections, settling at Wheeling.

Here he found the bride of his heart, daughter of a pioneer Virginian, John Gilchrist, with whom he has made the journey of life, and who survives him. The ceremony was performed by Dr. Weed on Nov. 28, 1837. In 1850 the family moved to Wellsville, Ohio, and in 1855, Mr. Albert, accompanied by two sons, still further explored the great West, locating at Lansing, Iowa. Here the family resided for 21 years, and spent six years at Keokuk. In 1881 they came to Salem, where they have resided ever since.

Mr. Albert was an active businessman throughout his long life until about 18 years ago, and successfully conducted operations in widely varying lines.

He was also an earnest Christian worker, and was, for 52 years an elder in the Presbyterian church, with which denomination he united at an early age, being ordained an elder at Wellsville, O., in 1847. In 1884 he represented the Willamette Presbytery at the general assembly, Saratoga, New York, and at the time of his death he was senior elder of the First Presbyterian church, of Salem.

Mr. Albert never aspired to any political office, though he had a number of local honors thrust upon him in the east. Priding himself on being a bedrock Jeffersonian Democrat of the old school, he held aloof from the excitements of modern politics.

While Mr. Albert never accumulated much pecuniary wealth, he always enjoyed the highest respect and esteem of all who knew him. His cheerful disposition and kindly greeting will long be remembered by all who came in contact with him.

For many years past, some one of the daughters has made her home with the aged couple, Mrs. Holton having lived with them for several years past.

“Grandma” Albert has been in very poor health for about a year, but has been improving of late.

Of the ten children, the eight who survive, six of whom reside in Salem are: John H. Albert, Salem; George W. Albert, Lansing, Iowa;  Eben T. Albert, Jr., Columbus, Ohio; Thomas G. Albert, Salem; Mrs. Elizabeth Holton, Mrs. Sarah Robinson, Mrs. Emma Rockwell, and Mrs. Anna Purdy, all of Salem.

Funeral services will be conducted at the late home at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, by Rev. H. A. Ketchum, of the First Presbyterian church. The remains will be given burial in the family lot in rural cemetery.

Funeral of Grandpa Albert

At his request, there was no funeral sermon over the remains of the late Eben Taylor Albert, who was buried on Sunday at 2 o’clock, from his home on the corner of Winter and Mill streets.

The funeral was a very simple one, conducted by Rev, Ketchum in the presence of four generations of the family and many friends who could not enter the home. Many more went to the cemetery, where the remains were consigned to the earth with prayer and burial service.

The pall bearers were J. M. Martin, John Moir, Sr., P. H. Raymond and A. O. Condit, brother elders of the church with Mr. Albert, H. V. Matthews, who also served as an elder with Mr. Albert, and D. F. Brown, of the  asylum farm, a fellow-townsman of the deceased at Winchester, Va.

At the cemetery the grave was literally covered with flowers, of which Grandpa Albert was so fond. Beautiful floral arrangements were sent in by admiring friends. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in this city from a private home.
