SOLDIER KILLED AT TEXAS FORT
MILITARY FUNERAL MAY BE HELD FOR STUART CLOSE WHEN BODY ARRIVES
While a member of the Seventy-sixth Aero construction corps at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Kelly field, Stuart Close, son of Mrs. Adeline Close, 1309 North Commercial street, met death last Thursday morning. The body will arrive in Salem tomorrow for burial.
The lad was 18 years old last May and has been in the aviation service for seven months. Just after receiving a letter personally from her son, saying that he was well, a telegram followed from the government announcing his death. Mrs. Close had only meager details since then but thinks that death was due to an accident. The government telegraphed that the body could be buried in the national cemetery or brought to Salem at the mother's wish. The funeral will probably be held tomorrow or Friday from the chapel of Rigdon & Richardson. Military services may be held.
Mrs. Close is a widow and recently moved to Salem from Lebanon. She has two smaller children. The family came here when school opened. The father died some years ago. For the past two years they have lived in Lebanon and prior to that time had lived in Grants Pass. They came to Oregon from Minnesota in 1903. The young man enlisted at Grants Pass.

CLOSE FUNERAL IS POSTPONED
IF SOLDIER'S BODY ARRIVES TODAY SERVICES WILL BE AT 2 O'CLOCK
The funeral services of Stuart Close, member of the Seventy-sixth aerial construction squadron, Kelly field south, San Antonio, Texas, have been postponed, awaiting the arrival of the body. The services were to have been held yesterday afternoon at the First Baptist church. The body did not arrive last night and if it should come this morning, the funeral will be held from the church at 2 o'clock. Rev. G. F. Holt will have charge of the services and burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery.
Stuart M. Close had been in the service only six months when he died October 18, in a hospital at Fort Sam Houston. He was 18 years old and was born at East Grand Forks, Minn. His mother, who lives at 1309 North Commercial street, received a letter yesterday from a "Faraway Mother" in San Antonio. Mrs. R. H. Gresham, who has been a friend of the young soldier. In it she learned that her son had been sick only a few days. In the words of another soldier boy the case was described to the effect that "Stuart's throat got so sore they took him to the base hospital." The government had telegraphed to the mother in Salem but the messages had not reached her because of the wrong address.
