MRS COLDWELL DIES
Pioneers' Daughter Widow of Well-known Printer
Funeral Arranged for Tomorrow at Finley Parlors
Burial Will be at Salem
Mrs. Fannie A. Caldwell, 73, daughter of early Oregon settlers, and widow of Edward Lathrop (Jerry) Coldwell, died at her home, 808 Wasco street, yesterday. The funeral will be held in the Finley parlors tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock. Interment will be in the Barker family plot of Walem.
William and Aurelia Ann Barker, Mrs. Coldwell's parents, natives of Massachusetts, crossed the plains by ox-team to Salem in 1847 after moving from their birthplace to Iowa. Mrs. Coldwell was born in Salem, July 28, 1857. Her father was a cabinet maker by trade and established a furniture factory in Salem on the present site of the Marion hotel, where furniture, made from native woods, was sold to the residents of the Willamette valley. Many homes in that section still contain furniture turned out in his plant.
Mrs. Coldwell attended school in Salem, devoting considerable attention to music in which she became unusually proficient. In 1874 she was married to Edward L. Coldwell, known affectionately as "Jerry" to the printing and newspaper trade. He was at that time a printer on the staff of the :State Printer." George H. Himes, now curator of the Oregon Historical society, was a workman with him.
In 1879, the family moved to Portland, Mr. Coldwell will be remembered by old-time Portland residents as a popular reporter of The Oregonian in which appeared his quaint and whimsical philosophy woven into the daily round of news items and feature stories. Since the death of her husband in 1908, Mrs. Coldwell has lived a quiet life at her home, devoting herself to her garden, her household and her books.
Mrs. Coldwell is survived by a brother, William J. Barker of Independence, Or., a daughter, Mary Coldwell, of Portland; a son, Orin B. Coldwell, vice-president of the Pacific Northwest Pyublic Service company, who also lives in Portland, and three grandchildren, Ruth E., William L. and Frances M. Coldwell, all of Portland.
