OBITUARY: 
John Cornforth Called Home Native of Iowa Resident Here Since 1917; Was Active in I. O. O. F. John Cornorth, 82, died last night at his home on route 4, Salem. He had lived at Salem for 29 years. He was born at Freeport, Illinois, April 28, 1854. In July, 1862, his parents moved to Caledonia, Boone county, Illinois, where he lived until February, 1877, when he moved to Sioux City, Iowa. He lived in Sioux county and the town of Hull, Iowa until September, 1907, when he came to Salem, where he has lived until the time of his death. When the town of Hull, Iowa was incorporated, he was elected as one of its first councilmen afterwards becoming town clerk and later mayor and was serving his second term as mayor when he resigned to move to Oregon. Was Guard Officer He enlisted as a private in company E, fourth regiment, Iowa National Guard, and was promoted to first lieutenant, then to first lieutenant and then captain. He resigned his office in 1897. He joined the Odd Fellows lodge in May 1882 in Hull, Iowa and on moving to Salem transferred his membership to Chemeketa lodge No. !. On October 22, 1913, he was united in marriage to Miss Bell West, who now survives him. Besides his wife, he is survived by one sister Mrs. Sarah Peterson, Mankato, Minn., one brother and three half brothers. Oregon Statesman 20 Jun 1936, 5:4
