OBITUARY: JAMES COX PASSES AWAY.
Citizen, Active in Public Affairs, Born in Salem in 1850.
James William Cox, a pioneer resident of Salem, died suddenly Sunday, at the age of 67 years. The family made their home at 354 North Winter street. Mr. Cox was the oldest son of William and Adaline Cox, pioneers of 1846 and had lived in Salem nearly all of his life. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Unitarian church. Interment will be in Odd Fellows cemetery. Mr. Cox was an active member of the Knights of Pythias, the only order to which he belonged.
He was born in Salem, May 9, 1850. Six years of his boyhood was passed in Walla Walla, Wash. For many years later he was in the grocery business in Salem. He was clerk of school district No. 24 for a long time and in the United States mail service for twelve years. He resigned from government service in 1914 on account of poor health. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Cox and two sons, Ralph A. Cox, of El Paso, Texas, and Chester O. Cox of Salem. He also leaves three brothers, Dr. Norris R. Cox, Charles M. Cox and Arthur Cox, all of Portland.
Jay Cox, by which name he has always been known by his friends, was a man of exemplary character, beloved by his neighbors and known for his charities both public and private. He took part in the revelopement and shaping of the early history of Oregon. He was also active in politics.
