"This was long before the day of typewriters. There were at least two best spellers in Oregon in those days. Asahel Bush was one of them. D. W. Craig was the other. And that was an art then. (F. Sumpter Craig, son of the pioneer best speller and newspaper worker, is one of the present best spellers of Oregon; he is appropriately, proof reader for the state printing office.)" OBITUARY: 

Sumpter Craig Ex-Statesman Employee, Dies. 
F. Sumpter Craig, 87, onetime proofreader in the state printing office here and for many years an Oregon Statesman employee, died Thursday at the printer's home in Colorado Springs, Colo. Prior to leaving Salem two years ago, Craig lived at the Devereau apartments. He was born at Oregon City, March 6 1863. Surviving are two children, Mrs. C. H. White of Los Angeles and Charles W. Craig of Seattle. Services will be held in Salem and will be announced later by the W. T. Rigdon chapel.

F. Sumpter Craig, at Colorado Springs, Colo., April 6, at the age of 87 years. Survived by daughter Mrs. C. H. (Eunane Craig) White of Los Angeles; and a son, Charles W. Craig, Seattle. Announcement of services later by the W. T. Rigdon chapel.

Final Rites for Sumter Craig Set Thursday. 
Funeral services for F. Sumter Craig, long-time Salem journalist and state printing department employee, will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. from the W. T. Rigdon chapel. The Rev. Lloyd T. Anderson will officiate. Interment will be in the IOOF cemetery. Craig, 87, died April 6 at a printers' home in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was employed at the Oregon Statesman for 26 years and later served as a proofreader with the state printing department. Born March 6, 1863 at Oregon City, Craig was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. David Watson Craig, pioneer journalist who came to the state in 1853. Craig's wife, Ella Calvert Craig, died two years ago. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. C. Herbert White, Los Angeles; a son, Charles W. Craig, Seattle, and a grandson, Peter Jordan Craig.
