Down, A History of the Silverton Country, p. 93 "My father, Warren Cranston, settled in the Waldo Hills in 1851," said Charles Knox Cranston when I interviewed him recently in Pendleton. "My father was born in Ohio in 1827. My grandfather, Ephraim Cranston was born in Rhode Island in 1800, moved to Illinois, and in the spring of 1825 was married. My grandmother's name was Rosanna Cranston. Both my grandfather and grandmother were New Englanders. The name of my father's first wife was Susan A. Marsh. Father married her on April 18, 1850, when he was about 23 years old. After the death of my father's first wife he married my mother, Helen S. Gregory, whose father, David Gregory, went to California in 1849. "Father started for Oregon in the spring of 1850, but when he came to the Missouri river he was offered a position as school teacher, so he taught school until the spring of 1851, putting in his spare time studying surveying. He brought his compass across the plains, thinking it might behandy to survey land claims. Father laid out the lines for many donation land claims in the Waldo Hills. My grandfather, Ephraim Cranston, and my grandmother, Rosanna Cranston, crossed the plains with my father. "My aunt Phoebe married Arthur Breyman. Their son Otto is the proprietor of the Breyman Leather company in Portland. "My father had three children by his first wife - Amelia, Ella and Orpha. My half-sister Orpha married the Rev. DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:
A PIONEER DEAD--HON. WARREN CRANSTON'S LIFE IS ENDED. Crossed the Plains to Oregon in 1851-- was the Pioneer Cheese Manufacturer of Marion County.
Hon. Warren Cranston died at his home, about twelve miles east of Salem, shortly after 6 o'clock last evening (Thursday, Nov. 9, 1899), aged 73 years and 8 days. He passed away in a peaceful sleep, without a struggle.
Warren Cranston was born in Champagne county, Ohio, on the 1st of November, 1826. He lived there until 1850, when he started with his father across the plains. His father became sick on the way, so the family wintered in Missouri. Warren taught school that winter near Nodaway, Andrew county, Missouri, being assisted by his young wife. He received $25 a month, and his wife $2.50 a week. They were married the day they left Ohio for the Pacific coast. The ceremony was performed on the door steps, and they immediately got into the waiting ox wagon and started for the boundless West. The maiden name of the young woman who thus renounced her home ties to join her fortunes with the young adventurer was Miss Susan A. Marsh, of Woodstock, Ohio. The date of the marriage and the starting was April 18, 1850. In the spring of 1851 a new start was made by the party, with ox teams, and after six months of weary traveling, they landed in the Waldo Hills in the fall of 1851. Both the father and son took up donation land claims. But Warren sold out to his father, and then located on the farm that was his home during all the rest of his busy life, and at the time of his death. He bought a squatter's right and took up 311 acres as a donation land claim, his wife taking half of that. This was in 1852. He lived in the small building that stands in the pasture east of the present residence, adding to it from time to time, until the present fine farm residence was erected, ten years ago. The first wife (nee Miss Marsh) died on January 2, 1857.
Mr. Cranston was married a second time, to Miss Helen Gregory, October 24, 1862. She died December 17, 1872.
