OBITUARY:
At his home in the Mansion house, Salem, March 14, 1894, Henry Croft, aged 78 years.
The deceased had been a resident of Salem since 1861 and of late years had been residing at the Mansion House on the northwest corner of Liberty and Division streets. Wednesday afternoon he was about the streets of Salem as usual and apparently in good health.
About 4:30 he went home and was seen by his daughter, Mrs. E. A. Thatcher, to pass throught the yard on the north side of his property and into his rooms. Nothing further was seen of him during the evening and yesterday morning he did not appear at his usual hour. His daughter, Mrs Thatcher, concluded she had better call at his residence to ascertain if he was all right and about 9:30 o'clock went into the dwelling and finding no one about the premices began an investigation. Opening a door into one of the back rooms she was horrified to find her father lying on the floor dead. She immediately notified a neighbor and a messenger was went up town to inform Marshal Minter of the circumstance.
That official visited the premises and upon ascertainig the old gentleman's condition immediately notified Coroner Stott, at Gervais. Justice Ed. N. Edes was given authority to conduct an inquest and J. A. Cock, H. N. Eley, J. J. Roberts, W. E. Baxter, J. H. Smith, and H. C. Tarpley were impanelled as a coroner's jury. Dr. J. N. Smith, of this city, conducted an external examination of the body but could find no evidence to show that Mr. Croft met death other than by natural causes and, upon taking the testimony of Mrs. Thatcher, the jury rendered a verdict to that effect. Mr. Croft was owner of the old Mansion house (and adjoining property on the north), and on Wednesday afternoon rented his room in that structure for use of the democratic primary in that precinct. He moved his bedstead into the room, just back of it and it is supposed, had been taken suddenly ill while preparing to place it back in its proper place after the closing of the polls. A lamp had been lighted early in the evening and left in his bedroom and when Mrs. Thatcher went into the place yesterday morning it was till burning, which immediately aroused her suspicions that her father was ill.
Mr. Croft was born in England on December 21st, 1816. In 1839 he was married to Miss Shipley and in the year 1855 came to America.
In 1861 they moved to Oregon settling at Salem and for a long time Mr. Croft was head dyer in the old woolen mill that stood on the ground just across North Mill Creek in North Salem. Seven children were born to them and of this number Mrs. E. O. Smith of Portland, Mrs. E. Thatcher and Mrs. J. T. Howd of Salem, are living. Mr. Croft's wife died died in 1882.
The deceased possessed considerable valuable property in this city and upon his person was found notes and other evidences of debt in his favor amounting to about $6,000, besides #20 in gold coin, $13.95 in silver, a silver watch and rolled gold chain, and a few trinkets.
