WOULD NOT SWIM OVER -- A large band of cattle was brought over the river yesterday for Mr. Thos. Cross. The attempt was made at first to drive them in and have them swim across, and partially succeeded, but the holw band turned back and made of the other shore when the leaders were well across. Then the ferry boat was employed to bing them over, and a part of the unreasonable creatures broke the apron of the boat off when coming over and took to the river again.
Oregon Statesman, 6 Dec 1870, 3:1.

MR. CROSS' FAVORITE. The loss of the valuable mare we spoke of yesterday by Mr. Thomas Cross while riding her to the Deschutes, was a favorite one of the owner. It was of Pathfinder stock and Mr. C. had raised her from a colt, had broke the animal and had never permitted anyone but himself to feed and mount her. The cash value of the animal was about $300, but Mr. Cross would not have taken double that figure for her.
Oregon Statesman, 15 Apr 1875, 3:2

VALLEY PACKING PLANT Thomas Cross was the pioneer meat packer as well as owner of meat markets in Salem. Came after him E. C. Cross, and now his son, Curtis B., and Frank, son of Curtis, active in the ownership and operation of the Valley Packing company, leading institution of its kind in this section. Four generations of the Cross family outstanding as packers. In 1870, the gross sales of Thomas Cross brought $120,000 and he used in that year 6000 hogs and 212 head of cattle. Notable for that time, though small, as compared with the volume of business of Salem's present packing plant.
