A well known pioneer shoemaker of this city, William Armstrong's business establishment was the rendezvous of the men who had assisted in developing the state from a territory into a state. He had the oldest shoemaking establishment in the city and it might be said of him that he also had the oldest friends. He came to Salem 45 years ago and has lived continuously in this city. He served at one time as inspector of customs in Portland and also served two terms in the state legislature. Leaving his old home on Commercial street about three years ago, he removed to the home of his stepdaughter, Mrs. Townsend. He had been in failing health for over a year and death came to him from the effects of extreme old age.
Mr. Armstrong had been a long and faithful member of the Masonic order and was the proud possessor of a very valuable Masonic library. He had recently donated several books to the local order of Masonry.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Ann Armstrong, he is survived by two sons, George and William, of Salem; two granddaughters, Mrs. George Judson, of Salem and Mrs. Roy Buckingham, of Medford; two grandsons, and two great grandchildren. He was also a prominent member of the A.O.U.W., having been affiliated with that order for many years.
