OBITUARY:
DRANK POISON BY MISTAKE.
Daniel Durbin Dies Suddenly from the Effects of a Draught of Carbolic Acid.
Daniel Durbin, one of the most highly respected farmers of this county, accidentally drank carbolic acid yesterday afternoon at his home on Howell prairie and died in great agony a few minutes after. In trying to get a drink he mistook a cup of the fiery liquid for water and drank it before he knew its nature. A messenger was immediately sent to this city for a physician and Dr. J. N. Smith left hurriedly for Howell prairie but before reaching there he met the messenger returning to tell him that the dreadful drug had already accomplished its fatal work.
Mr. Durbin was an industrious man, honest and generous, and during his long residence on Howell prairie acquired considerable property and won the highest respect of his neighbors for his good qualities. He was 61 years old and had lived in this state since 1845, coming here then with his parents from the East. His wife and son, Frank, survive him, and his brothers, William, Isaac, Solomon and Charles J., are residents of Howell prairie. Mrs. M. J. Starkey, of this city, was a sister of Mr. Durbin, and Mrs. Fannie Martin, another sister, lives four and a half miles northwest of Salem. His father, John Durbin was the proprietor of a livery stable in this city at one time and has many friends here.
