OBITUARY:
ANOTHER PIONEER IS CALLED BEYOND.
ISAAC DURBIN DIES AT HIS RESIDENCE ON WATER STREET - HERE MANY YEARS.
Isaac Durbin, on of the early pioneers to the Oregon country, died yesterday afternoon, January 28, 1913, at his home, 312 Water street, in this city, aged 81 years. Mr. Durbin was born in Richland county, Ohio, January 27, 1832, being the seventh child of his father, John Durbin. In company with his parents he moved to Hancock county in 1841 and to Clay county, Missouri in the fall of 1843. He came overland to Oregon with his parents in 1845, driving an ox team, and located in Mission Bottom, eight miles north of Salem. During the gold excitement in 1849, Mr. Durbin went to California, returning home a year or two later. Some time later he went to eastern Oregon and was engaged very extensively in the stock business there for several years. The deceased returned to Salem in the early fifties and engaged in the livery business with his brothers, Solomon and Daniel, their headquarters being located on the corner of Commercial and State streets. This was the time when the stages lines were running between the Oregon towns and San Francisco, and much of the business of handling the stage teams fell to the Durbin brothers. Mr. Durbin was married January 7, 1857, to Miss Olive Kays, who came to this country from Illinois in 1852. After selling out his interest in the livery business in the early eighties, the deceased bought a large farm in French Prairie. He lived there for several years, and aging selling out, moved to Howell Prairie, where he lived until two years before his death, when he moved to Salem. The deceased leaves a wife, three daughters, six grandsons, and on great-granddaughter. There was one son, but he passed away several years ago. The daughters are Mrs. Loretta Ross, Mrs. Lela Jerman and Mrs. Myrtle Bechtel. Funeral announcements later. Daily Oregon Statesman 29 Jan 1913 1:4. The funeral of Isaac Durbin, who died Tuesday, will be held at the residence, 312 Water street, this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Mr. Bowers of Portland officiating. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows' cemetery.
