R. R. RYAN DEAD.
PASSES AWAY IN VETS’ HOSPITAL
Final roll call was answered by another veteran of the Civil War Wednesday night when death claimed Robert R. Ryan, 80, in the veterans’ hospital in Portland. Ryan was taken to the hospital a week ago Friday and though he withstood a minor and preliminary operation, his advanced age was against him and he succumbed following a serious operation.
Funeral services will be held from the Terwilliger funeral home Saturday morning at 10:30 o’clock with Rev. F. C. Taylor, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Interment will be made in the IOOF cemetery. Members of Sedgwick post, G.A. R., will attend as honorary pallbearers and assist in the service. Robert R. Ryan was born in Springfield, Ohio, August 19, 1846 and was married to Elizabeth Potee, who died in Salem in November 1922. Six children were born to the union, of whom, John M. and William A. Ryan, both of Salem survive. He was married again last September and is also survived by his widow, Clara Ayars [?] Ryan and a sister, Mrs. Belle Stromd [?], all of Salem. He enlisted in the 61st Illinois infantry and served during the Civil War. He came to Salem in 1891 and made his home here until he was taken to the hospital. He was a member of the Grange, G. A. R. and Methodist church and a past commander of Sedgwick Post G. A. R. The remains will arrive in Salem Thursday night and be taken to the Terwilliger funeral home.
During the quarter-century he lived in Salem, Ryan was active in the affairs of the community and had many visions. One of his activities including the construction of the building now occupied by the Marion garage for use as a public market. The project was not a success, however. He constructed a number of other buildings including warehouses.
Mr. Ryan was the author of a veterans pension bill which received the approval of the G. A. R. and which is to be introduced at this session of congress by Senators Borah and McNary.
