CRUSHED TO DEATH BY LOGGING TRAIN.
SALEM MAN CAUGHT BETWEEN ENGINE AND CAR OF LOGS--DEATH RESULTS.
Death resulting from being terribly crushed between a locomotive and the logs on a logging car Wednesday evening was the fate of Jesse Henry Emrick, a resident of this city, who was working at the Portland lumber company's camp a few miles from Rainier. The deceased was a brakeman on the logging train there and was coupling some loaded cars to the engine when he was caught between the tender and the logs and his ribs crushed in, breaking the arteries of his chest and lungs and causing death finally by hemorrhage. One of the men seeing the accident signaled the engineer to go ahead and caught Emrick as he fell. An inch bar on the tender of the engine was bent by the force of the impact against the man's body. The accident occurred at 5 o'clock on Wednesday evening. The wounded man was taken to camp and his brother, J. M. Emrick, who is a timber taller in the same camp was immediately summoned. the man was then put on the train and an attempt was made to take him to Rainier. However, death came before the station was reached at 8 o'clock just three hours after the accident occurred. The body was brought to this city last evening and is now at the Rigdon and Richardson undertaking parlors. Jesse Emrick was a young man 24 years of age and was well known here having lived in Salem for a number of years. He was a member of the national guard company of this city. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Sarah Emrick, two sisters, Alice and Grace Emrick, and two brothers, B. W. and J. M. Emrick, all of this city, and a brother, P. A. Emrick, of Centrailia. Funeral annoucements later.
