OBITUARY:
ERIKSON DIES FROM INJURIES.
NORWEGIAN CONTRACTOR FATALLY HURT ON CLARK FARM THURSDAY.
PARENTS LIVE AT BERGEN, NORWAY -MAKE FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS LATER.
Mike Erikson, a contracting laborer, died at the Salem hospital about 8:30 o'clock last night from injuries received about 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon while clearing land on the farm of C. A. Clark in Polk county about six miles west of Salem.
A fragment of a stump jerked loose by a stump puller struck Erikson on the head, badly injuring his skull. He did not regain consciousness during the hours that intervened before his death. Erikson, in partnership with Carl Tangrup and Henry Schroeder, had a contract to clear about four acres of ground on the Clark farm and had been at work on the place for about a month.
At the time the accident occurred the cable of the stump puller had been attached to a stump and the team of horses attached to the machine started, when instead of the stump being uprooted as was intended, it broke off at the ground. The stress on the cable caused by the straining of the horses was great, and when the stump broke, the fragment was hurled with tremendous force, striking Erikson just above the temple.
Drs. Byrd and Smith of this city were called by telephone immediately after the accident and hastened to the Clark farm. The attempt of the physicians to revive the injured man were futile, and they ordered him brought to the Salem hospital at once. It was necessary to bring him to Salem by team and he was not received at the hospital until about 4 o'clock. Though all possible to bring him back to consciousness was done by the physicians and attendants, the doctors were practically sure after their first examination of Erikson's injuries that he could not survive. The doctors stated that the fracture and the concussion of the blow caused and internal hemorrhage.
Erikson was 35 years of age and unmarried. His home was Bergen, Norway. While little is known of his relatives, he evidently has parents living in Bergen, since a memorandum book was found among his belongings had written directions that in case of accident his parents, whose names are given in the book, were to be notified at Bergen. It is said that he has an uncle in Iowa whose name it has not been possible to ascertain.
Since he has been in the west Erikson has spent much of his time in Portland. His last lodging place there was at the California house, 63½ North Third Street. He was in Salem about a week ago and lodged at the Salem Commons mission.
The funeral service has not been arranged for definitely. Scandinavian friends of the dead man want the body kept until a week from Thursday if possible so that a thorough attempt to locate relatives or other acquaintances can be made, and so that people of Erikson's nationality can get together for the funeral service. If it is not found possible to make this arrangement the funeral will probably take place this coming Thursday. Rev. John Oval, the Swedish Methodist minister of Portland, has been communicated with and will conduct the funeral service.
