OBITUARY: OREGON PIONEER IS CALLED BY DEATH.
Mrs. Eliza Evans dies after Long and Useful Life
Buried Yesterday. At her home, Capitol and Mill streets, Salem, Oregon, Sunday, February 12, 1911, at 5 a.m., Mrs. Eliza Vincent Evans, aged 68 years, passed away after a long illness. Mrs. Evans had been a resident of Salem since 1866, and had a wide circle of friends. She was a member of the First Methodist church. She is survived by four children; John A. Evans of Seattle, J. G. Evans Jr. of Portland, and Miss Minnie and William Evans of Salem, the latter the manager of the Commercial Book store. The funeral was held yesterday at 2:30 from the W. T. Rigdon undertaking parlors, conducted by the Rev. R. N. Avison. Interment was made in I.O.O.F. cemetery. Mrs. Evans was born in Couthill county of Cavin, Ireland, and at the age of 8 years came with her parents to Ontario, Canada. She was married in 1866. She came to Oregon by way of the Isthmus of Panama, being on the vessel that was sunk off Point Reyes, and suffering all the horrors of shipwreck. Her first home in Oregon was just south of Salem in the hills.
