OBITUARY: YOUNG MUSICIAN PASSES BEYOND.
Alice Marie Baker, Student of O.A.C., Succumbs to Long Illness.
Alice Marie Baker, a promising young Salem pianist and a popular college girl, died yesterday noon at 12:35 o’clock at the Salem hospital following an illness of about ten weeks. She was the daughter of Frank A. Baker, 260 North North Eighteenth Street and Mrs. Lula B. Johnson Baker, who died in Salem June 1, 1904. The young woman had reached her twentieth birthday eleven days ago.
She was born in Salem and attended the grade schools here. She was graduated from Salem high school in the class of 1916. While in high school she was secretary of the student body during the year 1915-16. Following her graduation she attended the University of Oregon and was a student of Oregon Agricultural college when she became ill.
Since early childhood, Alice Baker possessed fine musical talent. As she grew older she was the center of many musical assemblies and was presented by Miss Beatrice Shelton in a number of formal recitals. She was an excellent accompanist and was keen in ear and sympathy. Her musical work attracted favorable attention from visiting artists among whom was Professor Theophilus Fitz, an author and famed tenor singer. It was natural that this young woman would be popular. She was a sweet singer and radiated her cheer and talent wherever she went. Before going away to college she was the pianist at the Bungalow Christian church. She played there for several years, where she was also president of the Christian Endeavor society.
Besides her father, she leaves a half-brother, Howard E. Baker. She also leaves many other relatives on both her mother’s and father’s sides. Her mother was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Johnson Sr. Her death followed a struggle of many weeks. Since last summer she had complained of an injury received from a fall. Nine weeks ago she was operated upon for peritonitis. Although she seemed to rally for a while, she gradually grew worse following the operation. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock. It will be held from the Bungalow Christian church, between Court and Chemeketa on Seventeenth Street. Rev. Frank E. Jones will preach the services. Burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery.
