PIONEER OF SALEM IS BURIED
One of the Early Day Stage Drivers Who Came to the West by Way of the Panama Route.
The remains of George Hastings, of Portland, were brought to Salem today on the 1:30 Oregon Electric train and given burial in rural cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. P. S. Knight, an old personal friend of the deceased. Mr. Hastings came to Oregon in 1866, in company with J. J. Dalrymple. He was born at Watertown, New York, and was nearly 71 years old at the time of his death. He was for many years one of the stage drivers between Portland and Salem and Eugene, and kept his position as a trusted employe of the Wells Fargo Company until the railroad was completed. He was first chief engineer of the Salem fire department, and was engineer of the Salem ferry until the bridge was constructed over the river at Salem. He is survived by his wife, five sons and two daughters. The family all reside in Portland, except an unmarried daughter at Kelso, Wash., and Mrs. Ed. Pugh in this city. There are also three grand children. Mr. Hastings will be remembered by hundreds of the older residents as a friendly and useful citizen, who was satisfied to occupy positions of trust in themost useful wsalks of life. He led an active life until a few days before his death, which resulted from paralysis. He brought up a family of respected sons and daughters.
