Note of Interest: John W. Hellenbrand of Oretown; Tillamook county, is in the city, having come over to attend the funeral of his mother yesterday. He left home early Sunday morning and rode the entire distance-about 75 miles-reaching Salem at 9 p.m. At Sheridan he changed horses, his faithful equine having become nearly exhausted by the hard riding over the Coast range. The Nestucca river being high fording was impossible and Mr. Hillenbrand was forced to come the trail route. He says the roads over the mountains are in a bad condition but in the valley they are good. He starts on his return home today. Oregon Statesman 25 Mar 1895, 4:3
DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:
At home in the First National bank block, Commercial street, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 1895, Mrs. Martha Hellenbrand, aged nearly 84 years. Deceased had been a reident of Oregon since 1850 having come to Oregon from the state of Maine accompanied by her husband and children on the vessel Golden Rocket which rounded Cape Horn. She was born at Argyle, Maine, on May 13, 1811, and had been twice married and was the mother of twelve children of which two are living - Charles W. Hellenbrand of this city and John W. Hellenbrand, of Oretown, Tillamook county. Her second union in wedlock was with Charles Hellenbrand during the 40s and on arriving in Oregon they settled in Clackamas county near the home of her brother, Philip Foster, who was then a farmer of that county, and whose place was best known to many as "Fosters". They were also residents of Portland for some time, afterwards moving to Marion county. Mr. Hellenbrand died twenty-three years ago and his body was laid to rest in Rural cemetery. "Grandma" Helenbrand has since made her home with her son Charles in this city. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and her demise has brought sorrow to the hearts of many, both old and young. The sad intelligence of her death was sent to John W. Hellenbrand at Oretown and funeral arrangements will not be completed until an answer is received from him. The message went to Sheridan and from there was conveyed by special messenger. It is likely the funeral will be held Tuesday. Interment will be in Rural cemetery.
